‘...that is, what emotions or psychic wounds physically shape the body’s public and private trajectories, from what parts of the body is history recalled?’

‘...time can be thought of as both linear and cyclical. That which we call ‘now’ is, in fact, a permanent tipping point; a balancing act between memory and anticipation, leaning back and forth between the ghost image of the past and a desire towards the future.’

Cody, G (1998), Woman, Man, Dog, Tree: Two Decades of Intimate and Monumental Bodies in Pina Bausch’s Tanztheater. TDR, Vol. 42, (Summer, 1998), p.115-131.

'Knatts Valley' is a film project presented alongside the live performance 'One Year On'. The film takes a series of photographs as the reference point, and seeks to disturb this idyllic setting in the heart of Kent: disrupting it through the presence and behaviour of the female body. Issues of loss and mourning are brought to the surface as there is a repeated physical returning to this highly charged space which has become a tense location of loss and struggle. The work wrestles with issues of the body's relationship to place, memory and grief.
